Manufacturers are spending resources in developing innovative and clean automotive technologies. These technologies will result in energy saving, using alternative energy sources, pollution free (such as electricity and hydrogen engine), and so on.
The emissions standards in many countries are very strict. For example, starting on the 1st of September 2015, all vehicles sold in Europe must meet Euro 6 vehicle standard, which is aimed at not only reducing carbon dioxide but also the amount of nitrous oxide. One of greenhouse gas which is mainly emitted by diesel engines. The standard allows emissions to no more than 50 milligrams per kilometer. While the Euro 5 standard, which has been used since 2011, allows up to 180 milligrams per kilometer of the culprit gas.
The exhaust from gasoline engines according to this new standard will have another greenhouse gas, sulfur derives, at a level no more than 5 PPM or 5 parts per million. This level of emission is down from the original value of 50 PPM.
The GLOBAL FUEL ECONOMY INITIATIVE (GFFI) has projected to limit emissions of carbon dioxide, the greenhouse gas that we all know well, in the future. It aims to reduce the use of fossil fuels in cars globally by 50 percent by the year 2030.
In Thailand, it has been gratifying that The Ministry of Industry has set "Automotive Industry Master Plan 2555-2559," taking into account the changing trends of global automotive technology. The plan focuses on energy savings, environmental friendliness and safety, as well as the outlook for the regional competition among the ASEAN countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia. The investment policy is to promote the production of environmentally friendly cars.
The term fuel-efficient vehicle standards or "eco 2" must meet higher environmental standards such as Euro 5 pollution and carbon dioxide gas emission rate.
